Don Shook

MERIT Media Relations LLC was founded in 1998 following Don's 14 years in corporate communications management with the Adolph Coors Company in Golden, Colorado.  During this time, he successfully accomplished award-winning public relations efforts for its subsidiaries Coors Brewing Company and Graphic Packaging Corporation. In 2000, MERIT Media Relations LLC moved to Las Vegas, Nevada.

Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Chevy Chase, Maryland, Don received a bachelor of arts degree in Communications from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota and is a member of the Alpha Tau Omega national fraternity,  He is an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he was selected for Officer Training School and pilot training.

After college and military service, Don worked for eight years in TV news and motion picture production in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Minneapolis/Saint Paul and Denver. He then began a nine-year career as a commissioned law enforcement officer with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office in Golden, Colorado, serving in the County Jail, Civil Division and the uniformed Patrol Division. He achieved Marksman, Sharpshooter and Expert levels with police weapons. After receiving FBI training, Don was appointed a Kidnap/Hostage Negotiator. He also was named JCSO's first-ever Public Information Officer where he served for three years as the agency's spokesperson.  He was also one of three high-ranking officers appointed to the Oral Review Board... the final step for applicants seeking a career with the Sheriff's Office.

In 1984, he transitioned from law enforcement to public relations when he joined the Coors organization at their corporate headquarters in Golden, Colorado.

Don has been a guest lecturer in public relations, journalism and communications for undergraduate and graduate-level classes at the University of Minnesota/Minneapolis, Metropolitan State University of Denver, Colorado's Red Rocks Community College and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). He's been a published columnist in daily, weekly and business newspapers throughout the United States.

Don's interests include photography, international travel, motion pictures, puns, classical & popular music, current events and "collecting" American state capitals and world continents. He also drives a late model car that has now been in all 48 of the continental United States.

Don and his late wife of 37 years, Maggie, have a grown daughter living in the Boise, Idaho area. Like her father, Danielle has also set foot in all 50 of the United States. Alas, his daughter is pathetically missing many of the 49 U.S. state capitals Don has visited.
